I've never really been a person that took interest in documentaries. In my eyes documentaries were always boring, so I just never wanted to watch them. However, after watching documentary Where to Invade Next, I've come to realize maybe documentaries aren't as bad as I thought. Now I'll be honest, when I was preparing my self to watch the documentary, I was agitated thinking, "I gotta sit here and watch this two hour long boring documentary, Lord help me". However, the documentary turned out to be beyond good and interesting.
In the documentary Where to Invade Next, Michael Moore took it upon himself to visit various countries in Europe and North Africa to examine and assess the social and political values elsewhere, to gain ideas on how to fix America's social and political issues. Michael Moore visited Italy, where he was amazed at how workers were gifted with more than generous paid vacation time, along with a marvelous work life. Michael Moore visited France, where he got to see the the French children getting served full course meals for lunch in school compared to the trashy food that is served for lunch in America. While visiting Finland, Michael Moore discovers that Finland's secret to successful education is to not give out homework. While visiting Slovenia, Michael Moore discovers that Slovenia is tuition-free for college students. While visiting Portugal, Michael more experienced what it was like to be at a place where drugs there is a decriminalization of drugs. In Germany, Michael Moore learns that the German history is a big thing to the Germans, whereas in America, American history is overlooked because of it being "history". In Norway, Michael Moore learns that instead of punishing inmates, they prefer to rehabilitate inmates. Last but not least, while visiting Iceland and Tunisia, Michale Moore learns more about the important leadership role women play in the two countries. Michael Moore took an idea from each one of these countries to bring back to America, to help America be the American Dream.
After watching Reflective Writing, a video that explains what reflective writing is and what it should look like, I'm going to reflect on my life-choice memoir assignment, and consider the process of putting the memoir together and was these approaches effective or not effective.
Why did you choose to write about your chosen topic? Good choice? I chose to write about being stepped out on in my relationship because it's honestly the biggest and only life choice situation I have been in throughout my life.
In class, we were assigned to read short story Hills Like White Elephants (Ernest Hemingway). The short story is about a conversation between an American man and a woman while waiting at train station to catch a train to Madrid. Throughout the entire short story the conversation that takes place between the man and the woman is an agitated conversation about an operation that the two are disagreeing on.
In class we listened to a podcast, What You Don't Know (Lulu Wang). In the podcast Lulu Wang tells a story about her grandmother being diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, and her family deciding as a whole to keep the diagnosis a secret from her grandmother. While on the other hand, Lulu is against the secret.
This blog post is a going to be a reflection on a reading called My Name is Margaret (Maya Angelou). In My Name is Margaret (Maya Angelou), Maya Angelou is speaking of a time when enough was enough for her, while being a servant at the age of ten to a high class caucasian woman, Mrs. Cuillnan in the 1930s.
After reading three different texts, I’ve found multiple quotes that so happened to catch my eye. Due to the fact that these quotes were so appealing, I feel like maybe they should be shared; and could end up eye catching to someone else as well.
Teach Writing as a Process Not a Product (Don Murray) Quote #1: “He was a character, a giant, literally larger than life.” -Don Murray Quote #2: “You shall not look through my eyes either, nor take things from me, you shall listen to all sides and filter them from yourself.” - Walt Whitman, “Song of Myself” Quote #3: “We have to be quiet, to listen, to respond.” -Don Murray Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life (Anne Lamott) Quote #1: “You don’t have to see where you’re going, you don’t have to see your destination or everything you will pass along the way. You just have to see two or three feet ahead of you”. -Anne Lamott Quote #2: “The first draft is the child’s draft, where you let it all pour out and then let it romp all over the place, knowing that no one is going to see it and that you can shape it later.” -Anne Lamott Quote #3: “Quieting these voice is at least half the battle I fight daily.” -Anne Lamott The Daily Writing Routines of Great Writers (Maria Popova) Quote #1: “I never listen to music when I’m working. I haven’t that kind of attentiveness, and I wouldn’t like it at all.” -Maria Popova Quote #2: “Frankly I do feel that my mind is going.” -Maria Popova Quote #3: “I write in spurts. I write when I have to because the pressure builds up and I feel enough confidence that something has matured in my head and I can write it down.” -Maria Popova Synphany Quote #1: “You make think working last minute is ridiculous, however the pressure helps the thinking process.” -Synphany Borrero Quote #2: “Take a break. Don’t just sit there for hours draining yourself.” -Synphany Borrero Quote #3: “Think hard, but don’t think to hard. Thinking too hard might cause a writer’s block to occur.” -Synphany Borrero I never got my brain to think so outside the box about things and myself, until I read and answered these interesting questions.
